1. 당신의 혀에 자물쇠를 채워라. 항상 당신이 생각하는 것 보다 적게 말하라. 낮고 설득력 있는 목소리를 길러라. 때때로, 당신이 무엇을 말하는가 보다 어떻게 말하는가가 더 중요하다. 2. 약속을 쉽게 하지 말되, 한 번 한 약속은 어떤 일이 있어도 지켜라. 3. 다른 사람에게 친절한 말이나 힘을 북돋울 수 있는 말을 건넬 수 있는 기회를 절대 지나치지 말라. 대상이 누구이더라도 잘한 일에 대해 칭찬하라. 만약 비판이 필요하다면 도움이 되는 방식을 선택해야지, 절대 꾸짖는 방식이어서는 안 된다. 4. 다른 사람들에게 흥미를 가져라. 그들이 추구하는 목표, 그들의 일, 가정과 가족들에게 흥미를 가져라. 기뻐하는 사람과 흥겹게 어울려라. 슬퍼하는 사람과도 어울려라. 아무리 하찮은 사람이라 하더라도 당신이 만나는 모든 사람들로 하여금 당신이 그들을 중요하게 여기고 있다고 느끼게 하라. 5. 항상 명랑하고 쾌활하라. 당신의 작은 아픔이나 고통, 실망감이 주변 사람들에게 짐이 되거나 그들을 우울하게 만들지 않도록 하라. 그리고 기억하라. 모든 사람들은 나름의 심로(心勞)를 가지고 있음을. 6. 열린 마음을 가져라. 토론하되 논쟁하지 말라. 불쾌함을 유발하지 않으면서 상대방의 의견에 동의하지 않을 수 있다는 것은 내 의견의 우월성을 나타내는 표시이다. 7. 당신의 덕(德)이 스스로 말하게 하라. 다른 사람의 악덕에 대해 말하지 말라. 뒷 담화를 피하라. 그것은 소중한 시간의 낭비이며, 극도로 파괴적일 수 있다. 8. 다른 사람의 감정에 유의하라. 다른 사람의 약점을 이용하는 유머는 대부분 가치가 없고, 경우에 따라서는 의외로 큰 상처를 줄 수도 있다. 9. 당신에 관한 험담에 귀 기울이지 말라. 당신에게 그 메시지를 전달한 사람이 세상에서 가장 정확한 리포터가 아닐 수 있음을 명심하라. 그저 아무도 그 말들을 믿지 않도록 살면 된다. 오히려 험담에 신경을 씀으로써 생기는 신경과민과 소화불량이 험담의 원인을 제공한다. 10. 당신에게 주어지는 평판에 대해 너무 조급증을 갖지 말라. 최선을 다하고, 인내심을 가져라. 당신 스스로를 잊고, 다른 사람들로 하여금 당신을 기억하도록 하라. 성공은 그럴 때 훨씬 더 달콤하다. THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF HOW TO GET ALONG WITH PEOPLE 1. Keep skid chains on your tongue. Always say less than you think. Cultivate a low, persuasive voice. How you say it often counts more than what you say. 2. Make promises sparingly and keep them faithfully, no matter what it costs. 3. Never let an opportunity pass to say a kind and encouraging word to or about somebody. Praise good work, regardless of who did it. If criticism is needed, criticize helpfully, never spitefully. 4. Be interested in others: their pursuits, their work, their homes and families. Make merry with those who rejoice. With those who weep, mourn. Let everyone you meet, however humble, feel that you regard him as a person of importance. 5. Be cheerful. Don’t burden or depress those around you by dwelling on your minor aches and pains and small disappointments. Remember, everyone is carrying some kind of a load. 6. Keep an open mind. Discuss, but don’t argue. It is a mark of a superior mind to be able to disagree without being disagreeable. 7. Let your virtues, if you have any, speak for themselves. Refuse to talk of another’s vices. Discourage gossip. It is a waste of valuable time and can be extremely destructive. 8. Be careful of another’s feelings. Wit and humor at the other person’s expense are rarely worth it and may hurt when least expected. 9. Pay no attention to ill-natured remarks about you. Remember, the person who carried the message may not be the most accurate reporter in the world. Simply live so that nobody will believe them. Disordered nerves and bad digestion are a common cause of backbiting. 10. Don’t be too anxious about the credit due to you. Do your best and be patient. Forget about yourself and let others “remember.” Success is much sweeter that way.
